The Rise Of Industrial Robotics In Automation

Industrial Robotics has come a long way since its inception back in the 1960’s. It has now become one of the key elements of competitive manufacturing and production, which helps achieve high productivity, quality and adaptability at minimal costs. Recent advancements and research in automation has helped industrial robots far supersede over Special Purpose Machines (SPM’s) in executing tasks and operations of varied nature across multiple industries.

Lets look at some of the fundamental benefits of working with robots over standard SPM’s:

  • Flexibility
    Robots add immense flexibility to factory operations. May it be a change in the floor space layout for space optimization or changes in product properties or addition of product variants, a robot can be easily programmed to adapt to these changes while its counterpart SPM’s do not offer such flexibility.
  • Multi-Functionality
    Robots have a much higher multi-functional capability compared to SPM’s, which can be very restrictive to execute multiple tasks. A single robot can carry out several complex tasks accurately while it would take multiple SPM’s to accomplish the same task.
  • Ease of use and maintenance
    Unlike SPM’s, robots are comparatively easier to operate and require minimal human interference and maintenance. They also have a better and more intelligent monitoring system, which helps optimize processes by analyzing data at regular intervals thus making it more efficient. 
  • Reduced costs
    Lower energy consumption, multi-functionality, optimization due to better monitoring systems, lower maintenance costs and better space utilization on the factory floor all add up and help reduce cost of operation and products.

One of the key projects we executed recently was for an automotive client with a requirement for a robotic pick and place system for handling delicate ceramic parts. This robotic system we developed was multi-functional and integrated with vision-based systems, barcode readers and part identification system which gave the user complete control over monitoring the operational effectiveness of the system.
